About the Event

Kyogle Comedy is back... featuring Jonathon Atherton!

After such an overwhelming response to our first show 'Fabulous, Funny & Female', Larry Laughs Loud's Vanessa Larry Mitchell returns to the Kyogle Bowlo to host the next instalment of loud laughs!

Featuring International Comedian Jonathan Atherton, supported by local Kyogle CWA favourite Odette Nettleton, The Comedy Commune's John Peacock and Lennox Head's favourite skit writer Paul Mamone....... and hosted by Vanessa Larry Mitchell!

Jonathan Atherton (actor, comedian, traveller, raconteur) is no newcomer to the entertainment industry. As a teenager he pursued an acting career. He made his debut in The Mango Tree, then went on to play television and theatre roles, including hosting the Lonely Planet series on television, acting in Warner Roadshow productions and performing in innumerable corporate functions. Fluent in at least 10 languages, Jonathon has worked and studied in most parts of the world.

A brief stint as an articled law clerk dispelled any middle class notions that justice existed for all and Jonathan hit the road to spend many years hustling variously and precariously in Africa and Asia. After escaping political detention in Uganda, Jonathan returned to his film work in Kenya. He secured a major role in the HBO production Lion of Africa (starring Brian Dennehy and Brooke Adams) and pre-production work on White Mischief.

He then made his way to Thailand (via Afghanistan, India, Nepal and Burma) and established a translation service for working women who wished to solicit extra funds from departed foreign clients. Whilst in Bangkok, Jonathan was asked to do a walk on in Good Morning Vietnam. “Working with Robin Williams was a real trip. He's a very positive person and encouraged me to think seriously about comedy...which is why I opened an Afro-Caribbean nite club in the South China Seas.”

A year in Japan teaching English and doing radio voice-overs in silly American accents, six months in Indonesia ‘to check it out’, and a year or so bouncing between the Philippines, Hong Kong, Laos, Thailand and Taiwan and Jono is back in Oz. Since the beginning of 1995 his flirtation with comedy has become a full blown affair.

Jonathan has also performed voiceover work for many major companies, and has been a guest announcer on Triple J, and B105 in Brisbane.

A veteran of comedy, his style is clever and adaptable, and he is an expert at reading an audience, then bringing them together. Despite his intellectual bent, Jonathan is able to converse with any crowd confidently, and is always a pleasure to watch.

His years of experience as a presenter, and comedian at venues across Australian and the world, make him a very capable performer, able to deal with any situation.

Join Jonathan, Odette, John, Paul and Vanessa..... and get along to support live comedy and your local Bowlo!

WHAT'S NEWS?

Wednesday, October 10, 2018: northernstar.com.au

A NEW comedy production is set to have Northern Rivers audiences laughing in the aisles. Larry Laughs Loud is the latest production from local comedian, Vanessa Larry Mitchell, who will be touring her show througout the area and beyond. Mitchell's comedy career was launched after she attended Mandy Nolan's comedy writing workshop in 2015. "I had no idea where the journey would take me" Mitchell said. Having attended the course for 'a bit of fun', Mitchell descovered that she enjoyed telling stories and potentially risky jokes to rooms full of people. After performing regularly in open mic nights in Byron Bay, Mullumbimby and the Gold Coast, Mitchell found it difficult to balance the travel outside the local area with her full-time day job and being a mum, so she decided to set up an open mic room at he Rous hotel in Lismore. An instant success, Larry Laughs Loud is now a regular monthly gig at the hotel and the Lismore Workers Club, the Deck and Lounge at SCU, Yamba Recreation and Bowling Club, and performances are planned for Alstonville, Nimbin and Evans Head. Mandy Nolan, a veteran to the Australian comedy scene, describes Mitchell as 'A refreshingly natural voice; sassy and confident'. Mitchell said Larry Laughs Loud is about giving new and emerging comics a space to develop their skills on stage in a safe and supportive environment, as well as bringing experienced talent to the region. 'We are generating loads of interest and support from people wanting to have a go on the stage a well as our rapidly growing audiences' she said, "I am particularly passionate about increasing female representation in comedy and supporting women to build confidence, to embrace their own style of humour, in a heavy male dominated industry".
